Eco-café Java Green Holds 5% Day for the TJSPI

WASHINGTON, DC – Java Green, a popular vegetarian and vegan café near DuPont Circle, donated five percent of its total sales from Saturday, June 14th to the Thomas Jefferson Solar Panel Initiative. Additionally, the restaurant’s employees gave a generous group donation to the TJSPI. In the afternoon, students from the TJSPI stood outside the café talked with customers. A representative of Earth Day Network was also present. Earth Day Network is an environmental organization that has been helping the TJSPI to fundraise and that was instrumental in organizing the 5% Day at Java Green.

Java Green advertises itself as an organic eco-café that “strives to create a better world by encouraging a socially-responsible, conscious lifestyle.” They cook with mostly organic and fair trade ingredients and they use biodegradable utensils and carry-out bags made from corn starch. Java Green and its owner, DJ Kim, have a large presence in environmental activist circles in the D.C. area. DJ, who is very friendly and has a personal relationship with many of his customers, has built up an extensive online network of enthusiastic environmentalists in D.C. TJSPI and Java Green plan to continue to work together to fundraise and publicize the initiative in the area. The generous support from employees and patrons of Java Green is greatly appreciated by the TJSPI. These events are essential to the initiative’s goal to spread information and enthusiasm about TJSPI and sustainable power sources.

About Thomas Jefferson Solar Panel Initiative
Founded in 2006, the Thomas Jefferson Solar Panel Initiative (TJSPI) is comprised of a group of student volunteers from the Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology. The students work under the guidance of Mrs. Amanda Hurowitz and Mr. Hadan Kauffman, faculty members at TJHSST. The mission of the TJSPI is to integrate solar energy into the TJHSST building and culture by first introducing solar power infrastructure and then ultimately powering the entire school from solar power via incremental increases in solar power production and photovoltaic system output. Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology was recently voted the best high school in the nation by US News and World Report. TJ is located on 6560 Braddock Rd. Alexandria, VA 22312.
